Bringing Up Brits: Expat Parents Raising Cross-Cultural Kids in Britain

Bringing Up Brits is the passion-project of Meghan Fenn, an Asian-American mother raising her children in her husband’s home country of England. Writing to fellow expat parents, she reflects on her own experiences and those of others like her who experienced loneliness, confusion, and step-by-step cultural learning specific to Great Britain.

This resource would best benefit one interested in how life in England can be perceived by foreigner parents, and the ways in which they may struggle to adapt to British culture. Unfortunately, this book feels out of date when discussing issues such as isolation from previous communities and difficulty finding people to connect with locally, given the explosion of social media and smart devices since the time of publishing.

Included is a directory of various online resources from the early 2010’s for the expat parent in Britain.

BRATS: Our Journey Home

This documentary explores the unique challenges of growing up as a military BRAT, including rapid transitions that doesn’t allow you to fully adjust to any one culture, formation by the military subculture that is unlike that of any specific country, and the impact this has one’s adult life outside of that environment. It consists of multiple interviews with people from several different countries, and footage from post-war Germany and Japan.

In Jerusalem war alles anders: Erinnerungen eines Kindes

Benito hat eine Riesenreise hinter sich: Vier Jahre lang haben seine Eltern in Jerusalem gearbeitet – eine aufregende Zeit für den kleinen Weltenbummler und seine Geschwister.

Natürlich hat er auch einen dicken Reisekoffer voller Erinnerungen mitgebracht. Einen Teil seiner spannenden, lustigen, ernsten und absolut lehrreichen Geschichten hat seine Mutter schon in dem Buch “Reise nach Jerusalem” niedergeschrieben. Doch nun ist Benito bereits 12 Jahre, viele Souvenirs hat er noch gar nicht ausgepackt und er kann manche Erlebnisse ganz anders einordnen und beschreiben. Von der internationalen Schule, an der fast täglich ein Fest steigt, bis zu den verschiedenen Haustierchen, die man am besten mit Schnapsflaschen jagt – das Leben in Israel gleicht dem kunterbunten Basar in Jerusalem.  Es lohnt sich, hineinzutauchen in dieses Gewimmel der unterschiedlichsten Kulturen, Religionen und Völker.

Four years ago, Benito returned from his huge journey: his parents worked in Jerusalem for four years – an exciting time for the little globetrotter and his siblings.

Of course, he also brought a thick suitcase full of memories. His mother wrote down some of his exciting, funny, serious and absolutely instructive stories in the book “Reise nach Jerusalem”. But now Benito is 12 years old, and he can view and describe some experiences differently.  From the international school, which has a festival almost every day, to the various pets that are best trapped with liquor bottles – life in Israel is like the colorful bazaar in Jerusalem.  It is worth diving into this swarm of different cultures, religions and peoples.

Sasha trilogie

Corien Oranje woont in Jakarta, waar haar vier zoons op een internationale school zitten. Ze schrijft kinderboeken voor diverse leeftijden en won met haar voorleesboek Storm in bad de vakjuryprijs ‘Het Hoogste Woord 2007’.

Zoenen Met Een Beugel

Sasha uit Jakarta (bekend uit De vreselijke verhuizing en Marathonin de dierentuin) schrijft in haar derde dagboek. Ze moet een beugelen dat vindt ze vreselijk, want ze krijgt niet alleen slotjes maar ookeen buitenboordbeugel. De beugel doet behoorlijk zeer en staatverschrikkelijk. Maar dan gebeurt er iets waardoor Sasha haar beugelhelemaal vergeet: de werkvergunning van haar vader is niet in ordeen het hele gezin moet opeens naar Nederland om een nieuwe vergunningaf te wachten!

In Nederland is het koud en ongezellig. Sasha, haar ouders en broerswonen tijdelijk in een vakantiehuisje en de drieling moet naar eennieuwe school. Sam en Nick vinden al snel een paar jongens om meete voetballen. Maar Sasha komt er moeilijk tussen. En tot overmaatvan ramp wil Julia in Jakarta niets meer van Sasha weten, omdat zenet heeft gedaan alsof Sam verkering met Julia wil, terwijl dat helemaalniet waar is!

Er is maar één leuke jongen in de klas, Brian, maardie ziet haar natuurlijk niet staan. Totdat Sasha en Brian allebei eenhoofdrol krijgen in de musical. Nu wordt Sasha het mikpunt van dejaloezie van haar klasgenotes, totdat Brian, om daar een eind aan temaken, aanbiedt om tijdelijk ‘nepverkering’ met elkaar te hebben …

Sasha from Jakarta writes in her third diary. She hates her braces. The underwire hurts a lot and the headgear is awful. But then something happens that makes Sasha completely forget her braces: her father’s work permit is not in order, and the whole family suddenly has to go to the Netherlands to wait for a new permit!

The Netherlands is cold and uncomfortable. Sasha, her parents and brothers are temporarily living in a holiday home, and the triplets have to go to a new school. Sam and Nick soon find some guys to play soccer with, but Sasha has a hard time fitting in.  And to make matters worse, her friend Julia back in Jakarta is giving Sasha the cold shoulder, because she pretended that Sam wanted to go out with Julia, when that wasn’t true at all!

There is one nice boy in the class, Brian, but of course he doesn’t like her — at least, not until Sasha and Brian both get leading roles in the school musical. Now Sasha becomes the target of her classmates’ jealousy, until, in order to end that, Brian offers to temporarily pretend to be dating Sasha …

Chaos In Mijn Hoofd

Brian heeft het uit gemaakt. Hij sms’t niet, hij mailt niet, hij skypt niet, hij hyvet niet. Kom op, Sas,. Delete zijn naam, delete zijn nummer, blokkeer hem, wis hem, vergeet hem. Vergeet hem. En gooi dat oorringetje weg.

Het is niet makkelijk om twaalf te zijn. En al helemaal niet als je ouders je de wereld overslepen zonder dat je daar om gevraagd hebt. Sasha en haar broers Sam en Nick gaan weer naar Indonesie, nadat ze een tijd in Nederland zijn geweest. Maar Sasha moet wel haar vriendje Brian achterlaten in Nederland…

Het leven begint eindelijk weer een beetje normaal te worden, totdat Sasha’s moeder ernstig ziek blijkt te zijn. Sasha wordt heen en weer geslingerd tussen hoop en vrees. Wat als haar moeder niet meer beter wordt? En wat kan ze doen om haar te helpen? Gelukkig dat er vrienden zijn. En broers natuurlijk.

Life is finally getting back to normal, until Sasha’s mother gets seriously ill. Sasha is torn between hope and fear. What if her mother doesn’t get better? And what can she do to help her? Fortunately there are friends. And brothers, of course.
